Isamu Yamashita

Isamu Yamashita was Chairman of the East Japan Railway Company (one of the six passenger companies formed from the privatized Japan National Railways); Senior Advisor of Mitsui Engineering & Shipbuilding Co., Ltd.; Japanese Chairman of the Trilateral Commission; Japanese Chairman, Japan–Soviet Business Cooperation Committee; Chairman, Association for Developing Information Network Systems; Chairman, Expert Committee on Science and Technology; and Chairman, Promoting Committee for Administrative Reform. He was also a member of the Industrial Structure Council (MITI); former Chairman, the Second Expert Committee of the Provisional Committee for Administrative Reform; former President of the International Organization for Standardization (ISO), and a former member of the United States Advisory Commission (1983–84). Mr. Yamashita graduated from Tokyo Imperial University in 1933, joined the Shipbuilding Department of Mitsui Engineering & Co. in 1937, and eventually served as its President and Chairman.
