Heinrich Weiss
Heinrich Weiss has been Chairman of the Supervisory Board of the SMS Group Düsseldorf since 2013. Prior he served as Chairman of the SMS Group Düsseldorf, a conglomerate of machine building companies for the engineering and manufacturing of machinery for the metals industry, especially for steel. He took over his family company in 1971 and developed it to an international group which is now a world market leader for the engineering of complete plants and all the necessary equipment to produce steel and other metals like aluminium. With an academic degree in electrical engineering he began his career in 1968 as Managing Director of a family enterprise. Mr. Weiss is member of the board of Bombardier Incorporated Montréal Canada and member of the supervisory board of several companies including Deutsche Bahn AG (German railways), Thyssen Bornemisza Group and Voith AG. He was member of the supervisory board of Commerzbank AG for 23 years. He is Chairman of the Foreign Trade Advisory Council to the Secretary of Commerce and Industries in Berlin as well as Member of the Board of the Asia Pacific Committee of German Business and the East-West Trade Committee. Since 2008, Mr. Weiss has also been Chairman of the German Russian Chamber of Commerce. He served as Chairman of the Federation of German Industries (BDI) (1991 till 1992), as Chairman of the Economic Advisory Council to the CDU Party (1983-88) and as Chairman of the China Group of the Asia-Pacific-Committee of German Business (1982-97). Mr. Weiss was given an honorary doctorate by the Aachen University (2001). He was a Trilateral Commission Task Force author on An Emerging China in a World of Interdependence (1994, with Michel Oksenberg and Yoichi Funabashi).
