Dr. Takuya Kitagawa is currently Chief Data Officer (CDO) and Managing Executive Officer at Rakuten group, a global e-commerce and tech conglomerate with more than 70 services and 1.5 billion membership in 30 different countries.
As CDO of Rakuten, Dr. Kitagawa leads global AI & Data strategy and operations, including Rakuten Institute of Technology, Rakuten’s AI research arm with centers located across 6 different countries. A theoretical physicist by training, he explores the implications of big data and AI through their business applications in order to better understand the behavior and science of human being.
Dr. Kitagawa holds A.B. (Mathematics and Physics) and Ph.D (Physics) from Harvard University. Prior to working at Rakuten, he worked as a theoretical condensed matter physicist at Harvard and published more than 20 papers in journals including Science and Nature Physics with more than 4000 citations. His major contributions to physics includes the proposals of dynamical induction of topological phases.
