Ambassador Tony Gardner has spent more than twenty years of his career advising on U.S.-European affairs, as a government official, lawyer and investor. After a successful career in New York and London, in 2013 he was appointed by President Obama to be US Ambassador to the European Union. In that capacity, he was intimately involved in the transatlantic trade negotiations, as well as data privacy, digital economy, sanctions and energy security.
Anthony served as United States Ambassador to the European Union from March 2014 to January 2017. Prior to this he was Managing Director at a growth capital private equity firm based in London where he managed financing, legal and tax structuring issues related to the firm’s acquisitions and divestitures. Previously, Anthony served in senior roles at Bank of America, GE Capital and GE International, all based in London, as well as at international law firms in London, Paris, New York, and Brussels.
Anthony holds a BA in Government from Harvard University, an MPhil in International Relations from Oxford University, a JD from Columbia Law School, and a Masters in Finance from London Business School. He is also a Managing Partner at Brookfield Asset Management, and a board member of Iberdrola S.A. He is also a member of the advisory boards of the Centre for European Reform, the German Marshall Fund and the European Policy Centre.
