Youssef Chahed is the youngest appointed head of Government of the Republic of Tunisia where he served from August 2016 to February 2020. Previously he was Minister of Local Affairs and Secretary of State for Fisheries. Chahed has been an advocate for freedom of speech, press and the protection of newly found civil liberties since the Tunisia January 2011 revolution. He led during his mandate a successful war against terrorist groups such as ISIS and Al Qaida. He was the first in the Arabic world to launch a fight against corruption, smugglers and mafia barons. In a difficult economic context he succeeded in addressing Tunisia public finance issues and reducing Public deficit after a program signed between Tunisia and IMF/WB. Chahed earned in 2003 a Ph.D. in agribusiness sciences from the National Institute of Agriculture in Paris (France), after which he served as a visiting professor and an international expert in agricultural policies
